About the Artist

Donald H. Steven, FRCVS (1932–2023)

Don Steven was more than an anatomist; he was a pillar of the Cambridge Veterinary School. As a Fellow of Churchill College and Director of Studies at Trinity, his unique ability to simplify complex clinical methods through hand-drawn sketches "literally shaped" the careers of generations of vets.

To celebrate the landmark decision in February 2026 to keep the Vet School open, we are releasing this exclusive series of commemorative mugs. Featuring "first press" sketches from Don’s private archives—ranging from his meticulous undergraduate studies to his iconic clinical illustrations—each purchase supports the continued growth of the school he loved so dearly.

Kings College Cambridge

"He was a magnificent teacher and a gifted artist, illustrating lectures with his own artwork - these remained for over 30 years the backbone of anatomy teaching …"

Attending Kings College College of the University of Cambridge

Donald Hume Steven (1933-2005) born on 5th September 1933, he attended Upcott House Preparatory School in Devon, and then Clifton College, Bristol as an entrance scholar between 1948 and 1952

Donald asked to take a scholarship to Clifton ( & at first was told "No, Not for you Donald, your Latin isn't up to it" ) He persisted , passed with flying colours- and excelled - going on to win many prizes;

He did well in his A levels and when asked to give three choices of Cambridge College . He put : King's, King's, King's ", after serving two years, National Service, in The Royal Navy , he then went up to King's in 1954 to read zoology but changed to read veterinary medicine.

After a few months in mixed veterinary practice in Worcester, the University wrote to Donald, and he was appointed to a University Demonstratorship in Veterinary Anatomy in 1961, and promoted to a University Lectureship in 1966. His formal Churchill connection began in October 1971 when he was appointed College Lecturer in Anatomy and Director of Studies in Veterinary Medicine. Donald retired in 1990 ( very sadly on the grounds of Ill-health ) and was then elected to a Fellowship in Title D.
